Bungay Marathon

Bungay weekend. " Why on earth go there?" I've been asked. Very simple - I've done the marathons farthest North,South and West already. So six Harriers set off,four to go all the way, whilst Bev and Sue saved themselves for another day. Suffolk is not flat- one half of the two lap course undulated quite severely-the second half was flat. The weather on race day dawned cloudless but with a cool stiff easterly breeze. Having finally worked out the way to get into the car park the inevitable happened. I had been there at least a minute when up pops a local runner and asks "hows Syd Wheeler". It transpired to be Brian Thomas ex Islwyn

The whole event was well run in every respect and all told we all enjoyed the experience. Andy O did 3.34. and Tash did a fine run in 4.33, for both it was their first marathon. Claire used it as training for longer things coming in in 4.09 whilst I exceeded expectations with 4.05. In the half Bev and Richard (Claire's boy friend) helped one another round in 1.58 and Sue Ost was just over 2 hours. We all enjoyed the weekend and would recommend it to anyone else wanting to race somewhere different. BIll Bewg.

With the easiest of transfers from Bristol Airport to Geneva and a 6 minute train ride into Geneva city; the stroll to our hotel was just a few minutes away. Down the end of the street was the lakeside and marathon 'village' ( perhaps hamlet is a better description ! ) with a view across to Genevas massive 450' fountain near the edge of the lake. The race started at 8.30 when it was cool but nearing the finish the warm day slowed us just a little. The route had lots of variety and was mainly flat with the majority of it on the lakeside, where a light breeze kept us cool. The Racewas well marshalled with good feed stations, despite-joining the half marathon runners for the last 4K . The finish needs some work as no clock was visible and finishing runners had a problem getting away from the recovery area. Finish medal was impressive 2 piece affair with 'G M' inlaid into moulded 'G M' channels. We all also got a Camelbak each ! Beats a Tee shirt ! Good infrastructure in the city and the micro- brewery-pub we found sold 5 or 10 litre 'Tubes' of beer brought to your table and mounted on a special stand with a tap feed. Need a few blokes to down that lot ! We all agreed a place to go back to be it for the full or half marathon. (The race not the pub,...... oh well the pub as well!).
